San Diego, California, is a large city in the southern part of the state. The city and NB San Diego are located directly on the scenic coast which draws countless vacationers each year. You can use your BAH to either rent on post or to rent/purchase your own home off post in the San Diego area.

Off Post Housing

This area of California can be pricey, however there are plenty of nearby towns with more affordable homes as well. The average price of a home in San Diego is about $452,000, while nearby Mission Valley is about $500,000. National City's average is $282,000. This is all compared to the state average of $384,000.

San Diego is the second largest city in the state, behind Los Angeles, with a population over 1.3 million. This region of southern, coastal California is very developed and closely populated, but remains a beloved tourist spot with beautiful beaches.

There are plenty of cities within a 20 minute commute of the base which also offer a variety of off post housing. These include Mission Valley, Chula Vista, San Ysidro, La Mesa, Spring Valley, Point Loma, and Coronado. Tijuana, Mexico, is just south of San Diego, but most Americans do not travel here. Los Angeles, California, is a 2 hour drive, in light traffic, north along the coastline.

On Post Housing

NB San Diego on base housing is privately owned by Lincoln Military Housing. 9,000 units are located in the San Diego area for the many Navy and Marine bases here. Homes can be found on and off bases and will vary a great deal in terms of style, size, and features. Waitlists can be quite long here, often from a few months to a year or more.
