Outdoor Fun

San Diego has a ridiculous number of excellent beaches for various kinds of sandy or coastside fun, including the Silver Strand Beach, Coronado Beach, Spanish Landing Park, and Harbor Island Drive Park.

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a long shoreline park (about 1.5 miles) with impressive ocean views, on the Point Loma peninsula. Also on Point Loma is the Cabrillo National Monument marks the general location of the first European (Spanish) landing on what today is the West Coast of the USA. In October a festival is held, including a 16th live history camp.

Ocean Beach Park has a dog beach section and a pier with fishing and a bait shop (no license required, no limit on herring), and nearby tide pools for those interested in tidal marine life; Ocean Beach Park is also served by an athletic field, and a bike trail.

Other nearby parks include Presidio Park, which includes a recreation center, and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, which includes a living history demonstration site.

Balboa Park, mentioned several times, includes many museums and culture centers, and is a park with greenery and fields, play areas.

The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park are famous worldwide; the main zoo is in Balboa Park, and includes tigers, elephants, gorillas, giant pandas, and cloud leopards, among over 650 other species. The Safari Park is a large zoo park with animals in a wild setting, about 40 minutes north, near Escondido.

San Diego SeaWorld is a large, famous, for-profit marine amusement park and show aquarium about 15 minutes north of base.
