Naval Base San Diego is homeport to the majority of the Pacific Fleet including over 50 ships and over 120 tenant commands. Naval Base San Diego is the largest Navy base on the west coast of the United States. The mission of Naval Base San Diego is to provide logistical support for the U.S. Navy and provide port facilities for the newest ships in the United States Navy Fleet. San Diego has over 40 independent school districts, but there are no DoD schools in the San Diego area. School districts are determined by the area in which the student lives. There are a large number of private and alternative schools available as well. Bus transportation is provided if the student is within a certain distance of the applicable school. The Child Development Program Central Enrollment and Waiting List is used for all Child Care Centers and School Age Programs on Naval Base San Diego. For specific fees and programs provided, call the Child and Youth Programs Division at 619-556-6165. Programs are offered for children from three years to seventeen.
The Family Housing Welcome Center is responsible for housing at Naval Base Sand Diego. All military on-post housing assignments as well as available off-post housing referrals are handled by the main housing office. There are over 9,000 government homes located in 38 different neighborhoods near San Diego. San Diego offers a full-scale privatized area for single service members. Homes for rent in the San Diego area run in the higher price range but most properties do offer both long- and short-term lease options. Call the NRSW Family Housing Welcome Center at 619-556-8443 or check at the office upon arrival for more information. Temporary housing is not available in the San Diego area except for local hotels and motels. The Navy Gateway Inn and Suites as well as the Navy Lodge offer accommodations for first-come, first-served military personnel. Pets are not allowed at either lodge. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-NAVY-INN for the Gateway Inn and Suites and 1-800-Navy-Bed for the Navy Lodge.
